Bi-Heart, Change of Heart

This time in HK, I got lots of stuff on my wish-list including the "Love Joey 3" DVD that I'd been looking for in vain for several months! Just some quick comments:

Cookies "11 Fires Concert"
It was quite short and they sounded rather soft on some up-tempo tracks. Right from the opening, they sang and danced to so many fast songs, guess they didn’t quite have the stamina and power. It was a marked improvement from earlier days though, with no major faults in pitch and rhythm save for the bits when they were crying so much that only Stephy managed to sing properly. They fared better with slow songs esp solo segments. Kary and Stephy gave credible performances of Elva’s "薔薇" (a tough song to sing!) and Faye Wong’s "約定" respectively. Ok, I like Theresa best (love her voice after listening to "綁架心上人") but I don’t think I’m being biased; I was impressed by her rendition of Nic Tse’s "非走不可". Initially she sounded a bit soft but really got into the act when singing the chorus part. She was good! I’m sure she would sing well if she does songs like this that are suited to her lower-pitch voice. She did a duet with Alex Fong recently but when are they going to plug it?

Anita re-releases
Each costs only about HKD65. G suggested getting the 3CD-compilation but I already had many of her albums and wanted a more complete picture. Some of her earliest songs turned out to be very ‘oldies-feel’, probably more suited to my mum, but I was happy with the Bad Girl album. 20 years later I finally got my hands on a copy, better late than never? There are many nice songs though I was surprised by the inclusion of a Canto version of "不了情". Such an old song but to be honest her voice sounded superb singing it...Quite different from her voice in "壞女孩" or "癲多一千晚". "似水流年" is another classic album and the cover 好型!

Joey “Bi-Heart”
This wasn’t on my list but I was caught up in the frenzy of her new album, released on the day I arrived. First of all, I love “越唱越強”. I kept hearing it in shops and G likes it too. Eventually decided to buy it (and got free poster!) even though I realised long ago that it's unwise to buy an album on the strength of one single. It’s amazing how I never learn...After listening to the album once, I was already beginning to regret buying on impulse. I thought she said that her new album would have a more ‘rock feel’, but where are the rock songs? Apart from “越唱越強” and “亂”, there weren’t any, just the usual ballads and a few annoying dance tracks. But after a few more listens, hey, I found that I was beginning to like it. No surprise that the composer of "亂" is Jerry Lee of Ping Pung, the song is so much their style! The credits also include Edmond Tsang and Harry Ng, familiar names in Hocc’s ‘glam’ album. Glad I bought it after all...

Songs of the moment:
越唱越強(Joey)~勞斯.萊斯(hocc)~非走不可(Theresa)~壞女孩(Anita)~偏見(Gigi)~天之驕女(Joey)
