Calligraphy
I first started practising Chinese calligraphy in Dec 2004. My initial thought was to improve my ugly handwriting and to be able to write Fai Chun for CNY. I don't think my handwriting has gotten better and I can't write Fai Chun yet!
Then again I haven't been very disciplined. There were several periods of long breaks during the past one and a half years, but happily I managed to pick it up again this year.
From the beginning, there was no cfoo. I just bought elementary books and cheap ink and brushes and started writing on old newspaper. My mum gave me comments now and then but she wasn't a master herself. I haven't kept my earliest (and ugliest) pieces so I'm not able to make a comparison with my latest ones. But I have improved though, I hope!
Ok, it's not good, but here are my latest works, written during my last practice session last Sun:

Happy Birthday to Ho C Goo!

I think you need thicker brush because the strokes are a bit thin compared to the overall letters..
P/S: heheh.. i don't even know how to write chinese words with pen/pencil and here i am giving "advice". Hahahah...

Guess what, I bought a thicker brush some mths ago but it's too fat to go into the ink bottle! So till now I haven't used it yet!
Anyway, i usually write the characters at half this size, which my thin brush was just right for. I thought i'd write these 8 characters bigger otherwise they'd look too lonely. But u r right, the strokes are a bit too thin.
buy ink slab? u not practising on rice paper ar?

I think it is much wiser to practise on old newspaper. No need to waste paper.. :)
I watched on documentary shows that in China, many ppl practise using only water to write on the floor. Save money on ink and paper! So clever...
After becoming expert, then can write using ink and paper :P

yeah mungy, my thoughts exactly as vii said. Ugly writing doesn't need good paper. Old newspaper is free, not wasteful and works just as well.
yes...it might have save money but u do not have an accurate gauge of your progress.
apart from writing, the application of strength to the characters is also an important aspect.
oh, you can also pour ink onto a ceramic dish so you can use the bigger brush you bought.
