Miyuki’s Melodies
Miyuki Nakajima’s style of singing takes some getting used to. In fact, sometimes I wished that she didn’t sing the way she did. But the composer of Sammi Cheng’s “薩拉熱窩的羅密歐與朱麗葉” and “愛的輓歌” is undeniably an extremely talented songwriter. Every time I listen to Miyuki's album, I am reminded of why I was so attracted to J-pop. Their music arrangements are so much more exciting and fulfilling than the average Chinese pop song. Even though I may not understand all of what the songs are about, Miyuki’s melodies (I mean the really good ones) radiate a warmth that seems to overcome any language barrier.
From the song "糸" (Tapestry):
(words & music by Miyuki Nakajima, translated by Ruriko Duer)
...
Your life is like a vertical thread
Mine is like a horizontal thread
We weave a tapestry together
And it may be used to warm someone else one day
And it may be used to hide someone's wounded heart
When one meets the right thread
We call it meant to be
From the song "Not Even Blinking":
(words & music by Miyuki Nakajima, translated by Ruriko Duer)
As our eyes blink life goes by so fast
Stars flicker brightly and disappear,
As we do
Life is so precious
Not even blinking, not even breathing
We seek others
Because our time is so short
Humans are wild animals
Born without fangs, poison or thorns
Instead we possess tears to cry and feel pain
We are bare skinned mammals
Looking at yourself in the mirror
You may not hear any songs to praise you
But I can sing many tunes of the goodness in you
You may never know
It's such a modest life, some may be cynical
It's such a humble life, some may be critical
But I will sing many tunes of the goodness in you
You may never know
Humans are wild animals
Born without fangs, poison or thorns
Instead we possess tears to cry and feel pain
We are bare skinned mammals
If it hurts by being barely touched
The heart is already broken
As you go along the way
Don't you see such people
It's such a modest life, similar to mine
It's such a humble life, could it have been yours
But I will sing many tunes of the goodness in you
You may never know
