Mr Children

I went through my lot of Mr Children albums last weekend.

“Innocent World” was the single that propelled this 4-piece band into pop reverence in 1994. Suitably impressed by this song which remains my favourite of Mr Children, I bought my first and their fourth album, “Atomic Heart”. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. I realised that they are one of those bands that you could probably just buy ‘Best of’ compilations. Unless of course you are a big fan who must own every album, but I’m not.

But lured by the strength of their singles, I got the next two albums anyway. “Deep Sea” was an interesting concept album with gems like “The Song with No Name” and “Letter” while “Bolero” was simply brimming with hits like “Everything (It’s You)”, “es”, “See-Saw Game”, “Everybody Goes” and “Tomorrow Never Knows”. And for some reason, I also picked up two of their pre-fame days albums “Everything” and “Versus”. 2002’s “It’s a Wonderful World” was the last one I got.

Mr Children’s songs can be very good and when they are, they would most probably be plugged as singles, perhaps with just one or two exceptions. And Kazutoshi Sakurai’s songwriting style hasn’t evolved that much, I think. But now I’ve ended up with too many albums to justify buying a “Hits Collection”...heck...Perhaps if they come up with a really comprehensive one, I might be tempted just to get it.
